MIKE GOODE

22 April 1939 – 7 April 2020

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Mike Goode. As evidenced by the outpouring of emotion, memories and respect on social media to the news, Mike was one of the iconic Masters of Fosters School in recent times. As 1st Form Master, he was our first contact and guiding light for our early School days, and the experiences just got better from then on, whether in the Physics Lab, at Blashenwell Camp or in everyday life around the School, and Boarding House for some.

He was devoted not only to the School, but afterwards to our Old Boys’ Association. We all owe him a debt of gratitude. In latter years he did not enjoy the best of health with Parkinsons, but with no surprise, he tackled this and ageing life with energy, a positive mind and always a cheery smile. Our thoughts go to Selina, his wife, Caroline and Jennifer, his daughters, and the wider family. We hope they will take some comfort that Mike is at peace, and also from the massive recognition he has received on the news of his passing.

Sadly on a national scale, these are unique times and we will not be able to pay our respects for, and celebrate Mike’s life for a little while. I know the family are planning something for later in the year and I hope we will be able to play our part in that as an Association.

With best wishes, keep well and keep safe.
Philip Dolbear Chairman

I was hoping to find more info about Lord Digby’s on this site. Except for the fine photo of the front, there doesn’t seem to be much at all…

I am an American that attended the school from about 1968 – 1970. I lived in Holwell. Does anyone out there remember me? My maiden name was Kathy O’Rourke.

Hello Kathy! I came across this website by chance just now so sorry for the very late reply. I recognised your name straight away. I seem to remember you introduced us to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!

Hi Kathy, I’d love to put more info about Lord Digby’s school up but I don’t know where to get it. I’m sure someone out there must have magazines, photos etc. Must try harder in tracking it down!

Jeff has very cleverly put a Membership Form on this website (Pages – Membership – LDS OGA) which comes through to me and I will print off and pass on to the OGA Secretary Betty (she does not have e.mail). I can acknowledge that electronically which gives you my address and you can send me a £10 cheque made out to the Lord Digby’s School Old Girls Association which I will also pass on. That means we can send hard a copy of the Magazine to you when it is produced which is every 18 months now.

I hope there are more Old Girls out there who would like to reminisce, as you say. I also hope we can look to the future and developing closer links with Gryphon School, as the Old Fosterians have already done.

    With best wishes,
    Pauline
