MIKE GOODE

22 April 1939 – 7 April 2020

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Mike Goode. As evidenced by the outpouring of emotion, memories and respect on social media to the news, Mike was one of the iconic Masters of Fosters School in recent times. As 1st Form Master, he was our first contact and guiding light for our early School days, and the experiences just got better from then on, whether in the Physics Lab, at Blashenwell Camp or in everyday life around the School, and Boarding House for some.

He was devoted not only to the School, but afterwards to our Old Boys’ Association. We all owe him a debt of gratitude. In latter years he did not enjoy the best of health with Parkinsons, but with no surprise, he tackled this and ageing life with energy, a positive mind and always a cheery smile. Our thoughts go to Selina, his wife, Caroline and Jennifer, his daughters, and the wider family. We hope they will take some comfort that Mike is at peace, and also from the massive recognition he has received on the news of his passing.

Sadly on a national scale, these are unique times and we will not be able to pay our respects for, and celebrate Mike’s life for a little while. I know the family are planning something for later in the year and I hope we will be able to play our part in that as an Association.

With best wishes, keep well and keep safe.

Thought I was a dinosaur until I found the site…

Attended Fosters during the ’50s and in retrospect one of the happiest times of my life…

Fondly remember the dances with the “diggers” girls.

John. I came across the Fosterians website accidentally a day or so ago when trawling the internet and was particularly interested in your note – albeit from back in March 2011. I am the present owner of the ‘Fosters Flyer’ EDV 502D and took it on, initially with Chris and Carol Lea back in the 80’s. As you obviously know, it is now preserved in the Midlands and much has been done to it since its Fosters days. As to photographs, I have many in its restored state, but I do have a photograph, not from school days, but shortly after it arrived in the Midlands in its school ‘all over ads’ livery. I also have a copy of the Sherborne ‘Talk of the Town’ and a picture of the coach before its trip to Italy. If you think I may have anything of interest – then please get in touch.

    Regards

Anyone out there in old git land remember Mandy Bird LDS 1977-79. I’m almost sure I saw her at the Beautiful Days music festival last weekend. Not sure enough to shout out ‘Oi Mandy Bird’ though!

Matt, Indeed, she’s given up banking and now works as a teacher – had lunch with her before Christmas! Give me a call on 07867540416.

Hi Matthew, Mandy Bird here! Now Amanda Donnelly, happily divorced and back in Sherborne. Steve Wheatley just called me and asked me if I was at Beautiful Days. You should have shouted out – I was there with Jane Fairney. Less of the old git land if you don’t mind…
Anyway, give me a call to reminisce about Beautiful Days or the old days or if you’re coming down to Dorset sometime 07963 834337

Well if you two weren’t so convincing I’d say this was an April Fool trick! I quite given up any hope of a reply.
Strangely enough I just returned from Dorset tonight with my daughter (aged 18 would you believe – what was that old git comment again?). We have a holiday home at Lyme Regis. I do sometimes pop over to Sherborne to see my Dad so will contact you both next time I’m there – thanks for the phone numbers.
I’m also at BDs again this summer with family & friends so let me know if you are going again. We can wave our glow sticks together to Primal Scream – I think that trumps reminiscing about the old days don’t you?
