The charity walk to Shaftsbury and back was actually in 1967 after the “Torrey Canyon” oil spill . Jon Blackwell ( where is he now ?) and I had been walking the Cornish Coastal footpath when it happened and ended up running a seabird collection sanctuary near Trevose Head. We were so fit as a result that we came in miles ahead of everybody else on the Shafsbury walk – a mere 33 miles ( plus .of course , the four I then had to walk back to Bradford Abbas afterwards 🙂 ).

I remember the walk well – and surprised we all walked so far.I’m the one in the middle with the check shirt. Also fond memories of doing the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award around about the same time – camping out on Lydlinch common after walking from Sherborne and having Mr Mckay (or was it Mr Norfolk?) come out and inspect our camp. I recall the report included a comment ” catering included a preponderance of baked beans”! Still brings a smile to my face after all these years when I turn at the junction towards Kings Stag on my way to see my mum.

The walk brings back memories of walking in the sunshine with “Itchycoo Park” by the Small Faces playing on a transistor radio, as well as severe blisters and muscles that refused to work once I sat down towards the end.
As regards the camping, wasn’t Lydlinch Common the practice one and we later went somewhere near to where the chemistry teacher lived (who’s name escapes me).

Think the group photo should be 1992, since the prefects in the whole school shot are the same people.
